The early BILLS
family was of the Quaker faith as attested to by Hinshaw's "Encyclopedia
of American Quaker Genealogy”.
The very earliest known connection to the BILLS family is the mention of
a STEPHEN HOPKINS. He is involved with the Mayflower group, though the
line does not descend directly
from him. Perhaps we should go to the entry of Price Alexander a
Camlet-merchant in The England and Holland of the Pilgrims,
by the late Henry Martyn Dexter, DD, LLD and his son Morton Dexter,
on page 629. Guar, by Roger. Wilson and Henry. Wood, May 18, 1615
Guar: and·Sharp Aug. 24,1618. DO. WM. RING June 7, 1619. Lived in
Zevenhuysen Oct. 15, 1622, with wife and three children. Bought house
on Nonnensteeg for 175g from Hen Richard Dec. 13, 1627. Then
say-draper. In George F. Willison's book titled "Saints and Strangers",
he notes that Robert Cushman wrote of WILLIAM RING in Chapter 8, page
129. Poore WILLIAM Ring and myselfe doe strive who shall be meate first
for ye fishes; but we looke for a glorious resurrection ••• and mentions
it again
on page 136.He is believed to have died before reaching the hoped for
home in America. This is mentioned by BRADFORD.
MARY RING is listed as coming to Plymouth on the ANNE with three
children, No mention of WILLIAM. There is some question as to
the date that MARY RING came to America; The Compendium of American
Genealogy Vol VII page 95 reads 1630. Esther Miller Fleming Graham in
her Deane History states that Elizabeth Ring and Stephen Deane married
between 1627 and 1629. May Belle
Lontz says they married 16 Sept 1627 in her "OUR GERMAN, PILGRIM, AND
QUAKER ANCESTORS”. MARY made her will in 1631, it was proved 28 Oct.
1633. Her Children were Elizabeth, Meriam and Andrew. From the
inventory in her will, she was a woman with money.
Her will is written up in PLYMOUTH COLONY WILLS AND INVENTORIES.
ELIZABETH RING married STEPHEN Deane; brother Andrew married
the daughter of STEPHEN HOPKINS of the MAYFLOWER. The connect is by
marriage.
I am happy to find one family as near as possible, when they arrived in
America.
STEPHEN DEANE was found first on a list of passengers that arrived,
after one year, on the second small ship FORTUNE.
STEPHEN owned land. He received one acre when he arrived in the land
division. He bought one acre from Philip Delanoy.
STEPHEN is written up in PLYMOUTH COLONY WILLS AND INVENTORIES. They
had children Elizabeth, Meriam, Susan, William, Mehitable, Joanna and
Stephan.
Elizabeth was born in Plymouth about 1628-30. After the Deans moved
to Eastham about 1650, Elizabeth married WILLIAM TWINING, JR.
William was called a HUSBANDMAN. He was BORN IN ENGLAND AND emigrated
with his father before 1641. WILLIAM TWINING, SR. was born in England.
He married ANNE DOANE about 1652. WILLIAM died on 15 April 1659 at
Eastham and ANNE died 27 Feb, 1680.
She was daughter of Henry Doane. Their children were .
