Note 4 -
[Data on descendants was obtained from: Wayne Ogle, Bonnie Delores
Nickerson, Glen R. Honey, Myrtle Keck, Ruth Lazanis, Danny M. Fluhart,
James W. Ogle, Oren Ogle, Julia Robison, Lola Sauers, Minnie E. Trokey,
and Charles E. Ogle.] Delores Nickerson believes his birth date should be 1790-1794 because you would expect Mordecai to be older than Betsy and she was abt 21 when they married. The Marriage certificate states "on 23rd day of November I joined Mordecai Ogle and Betsy Waninto (Warrints){-Register} date - under my hand - 4th day January 1816. signed Alexander Lee, J.P.. The identity of his parents has not been proved, but they may have been Jehu Ogle and his wife, Isabella, and he was almost certainly a grandson of Jehu Ogle and Ruth Beall. In 1815 Jehu and Isabelle Ogle deeded land in Harrison Co., OH, (T13, R5, Sec. 35) to Mordecai Ogle. Mordecai was enumerated on the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Columbiana Co., OH. His widow was listed on the 1840 census in Fulton Co., IL, with three boys and two girls. Mordecai was in Capt. Nicholas Davis' Co. of Russell's Battalion of Ohio Militia, war of 1812. He served in Detroit as substitute for Thomas George 26 Aug 1814 to 25 Feb 1815. His rank was Private. His name was spelled on the Nov 30 1814 Company Muster Mordeciah Ogel, On the Nov 30, 1814 Payroll Mordecieh Ogel, and on the Dec 31 1814 Company Muster Mordica Ozal. On commencement of service Dec 1 1814-Dec 31 1814 he was required to pay for U.S. clothing drawn: 1 blanket, 1 coat, 1 shirt, 1 shoe, 1 stocking, 1 overalls, his monthly pay was $8.00 and they deducted for the equipment one dollar forty five and one quarter cents. An apparent delayed entry in the company payroll of Mar 14 1815 shows his last service pay period to time of discharge to be Jan 1 1815 thru Feb 25 1815 inclusive. He was paid an extra 17 days allowance to return from Detroit to Cadiz, his first place of rendezvous. The muster and payroll reports seem to indicate that he did at least two separate stints for Thomas George because he was charged two different times for U.S. clothing drawn each showing different periods of service. The Captain was paid $40.00 per month. On 25 Jun 1831, a Mordecai Ogle, believed to be this person, obtained a land patent on 130 acres (R9, T3, S3 and S10) in Richland Co., OH, for $162.50. Mordecai Ogle also owned land in Columbiana Co., OH, (T14, R5, S19) which had belonged to Jehu Ogle and his wife, Isabella. This land was sold to John Patterson. Mordecai signed a will on 30 Nov 1839, which was probated in Schuyler Co., IL, on 11 Jan 1840. Besides farming, Mordecai may have been a cooper. Sauers gave his year of birth as 1795. Fluhart listed his birth as about 1775, but that date is not possible if his presumed father was born about 1765.Trokey gave the date of marriage as 4 Jan 1815. He married 23 Nov, 1815, Elizabeth "Betsy" Waninto, in Harrison Co., OH, The marriage record to Mordecai listed her name as Betsy Warrints (Ohio Genealogical Society, "Ohio Marriage Records Through 1820," p. 777. As Elizabeth Ogle, she married 2nd David Burgess, 5 Jan 1841. Mordicai (bc: 1795) - 1st found in Military 14 Aug, 1814 - Detroit Michigan #1&2. mg record 23 Nov 1815. Back |
